ENGLISH 9

Teacher: Tyler Davis

Text: Glencoe Literature Course 4, 2002

9th grade English will focus on close reading and effective writing. The class will feature literature from around the world. The course will include multiple genres including, but not limited to: novels, novellas, short stories, nonfiction, poetry, and plays. Students will be giving at least one speech during the year. Students will write in a variety of formats and for a variety of audiences including analysis, interpretation, comparison and contrast, and a writer’s workshop. With the major writing assignments students will learn how to use textual evidence to support your thesis.

You will write in a variety of formats and for a variety of audiences including analysis, interpretation, poetry, argumentation, free writing, narration, description, comparison and contrast, and cause/effect. During 4th quarter students will write their autobiography. With the major writing assignments you will learn how to use textual evidence to support your thesis.

The major writing assignment will be a college research paper in the spring. The course will include multiple genres including, but not limited to: novels, novellas, short stories, nonfiction, poetry, and literary theory. Students will write in a variety of formats and for a variety of audiences including analysis, interpretation, poetry, research, free writing, narration, description, comparison and contrast, and cause/effect. At the end of the year students will write at least five essays that might be used for college registration. With the major writing assignments students will learn how to use textual evidence to support their thesis.

ENGLISH 12

Teacher: Sarah Leonardis

Text: Glencoe Literature World Literature, 2002

Grade 12 English focuses on college preparation skills including research and citation practice.  The major assignments will include in class essay exams, a research paper, a multi-genre project, college essays for submission to universities, and a persuasive speech.  Students are exposed to vocabulary activities that examine the parts of words in order to understand the meaning of the whole. The major literary works are from the modern and post modern era.  Grade 12 continues to reinforce topics from previous grades such as syntax, diction, and nonfiction reading.  Irony and satire are the literary elements emphasized in this grade. Students will explore timeless themes in literature and be challenged to think critically and analytically not only during the course of the year but also beyond their high school years.

AP Exam Preparation

Throughout the year students will practice taking sections of the AP Literature exam in class. There will also be opportunities to receive practice outside of class. We will be looking at the test in detail throughout the year and help students to improve their individual abilities. Students are strongly encouraged to take the test in the spring. If they choose not to take the test, an alternate assessment will be given.
